Gingivitis vs Periodontitis

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums caused by the accumulation of plaque and tartar. Good gum health is essential for optimal overall health.

The symptoms

  • Bad Breath;
  • Bleeding gums when brushing teeth;
  • Red, swollen and sensitive gums.

The causes

  • Poor dental hygiene;
  • Deficient immune system that can be caused by a malfunctioning thyroid gland, diabetes, pregnancy, or leukemia;
  • Hereditary factors;
  • Bad habits such as nail biting, clenching or grinding teeth, smoking, consuming too much sugar or maintaining a poor diet;
  • Taking certain medications, including hormonal contraceptives and drugs.

It is important to treat gingivitis quickly before it turns into periodontitis, because the bone that supports the teeth deteriorates, weakens the teeth and ultimately causes the loss of them.

Note that pregnancy gingivitis is usually only temporary, as it is caused by hormonal changes. Everything returns to normal after delivery.
